BOOK: Water Quality in Third Pole
A book entitled 'Water Quality in the Third Pole', edited by Chhatra Mani Sharma and others is recently published by Elsevier. Dr. Sharma is a Professor of the CDES-TU. The book contents are contributed by 25 authors from different institutions from different countries.
The Tibetan Plateau and the Himalayas, the Third Pole (TP) in the context of freshwater resources, is a lifeline for millions of people through hydropower, irrigation, industrial, as well as domestic uses. The freshwaters in the TP were regarded as pristine owing to their comparatively undisturbed locations. Recent findings, however, have indicated that the water resources in this region are polluted through local, regional, as well as long-range transport of pollutants, particularly heavy metals, nutrients, persistent organic pollutants, and black carbons. Therefore this book attempts to give updated information on the status of freshwaters in the TP due to both natural and anthropogenic activities. This will also help to pave the way for the management of these freshwaters and to discover the research gaps so that future research heads in the right direction for the protection of such a prestigious resource.
