- Agriculture is an important part of the Nepali economy and social fabric, contributing an estimated 27% of the GDP in 2017 (source: indexmundi) and providing employment to more than 70% of the labour force. Approximately 40% of the total agricultural areas are irrigated. Agriculture and particularly irrigated agriculture is facing a number of challenges and have considerable potential for improvement and expansion. While Nepal has ample water resources the challenge is how best to develop both surface water and groundwater resources for intensification of existing irrigated lands and for development of new lands, and to improve the performance and productivity of irrigation system more generally through the adoption of modern infrastructure and management methods. 2
